Can You Solve It? That Forgotten Netherlands Invention Which Shaped the Modern Globe
There are numerous contenders to claim the title of “planet’s greatest invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a new book, however, that honor belongs to the mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to automated cutting, building a modest trading ship required approximately 10 lumberjacks laboring over 90 days,” writes the author. “With wind-powered lumber mills, the same quantity of cut lumber could be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Owing to their rapid mechanical cutter, which turned logs into boards with virtually no human effort, Dutch builders could construct vessels faster compared to anyone else, an advantage that unleashed a century of Netherlands maritime, financial and artistic dominance in the continent and the globe.
The Original Genuine Industrial Device
The inventor's sawmill, argues the writer, represented “humanity’s initial true factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a gear. One component transformed its circular movement to vertical motion to power the saw. Another component changed that same spinning motion into a sideway’s movement feeding the log to the blade. A geared mechanism shifted the wood ahead a measured step each stroke.
“Every component seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s genius was to combine these parts so the machine acted in a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting with each downward stroke while advancing with each upward stroke. This constituted an astonishingly clever application of fundamental parts.”
A fact that leads us up to the current puzzle. The task is for you to reimagine one of the fundamental ideas behind Corneliszoon’s machine.

Design a mechanism that turns rotary motion into up-and-down motion. You have these items only: A rotating disc. Two pins. Two rods. A “sleeve”, that is a tube or sleeve through which a single the rods will fit snugly. (Assume it is possible to put things on a base, so that the parts don’t collapse.)
