Cowboys Owner Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture toward Spectators

The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward attendees during a Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.

Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a decisive win.

“It was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”

He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”

League Precedent for Proprietor Fines

This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases include:

  • Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
  • Then Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, possesses an approximate net worth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.

Recent Controversies and Public Attention

The incident comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who faced significant criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that examined his influence in developing the Dallas franchise into the globe’s most valuable sports franchise, even with its recent title shortcomings.

The league’s decision to fine Jones highlights its ongoing initiative to maintain professional conduct among all team officials, irrespective of their status or wealth.
