No major competition promotes equal footing like the NFL: it's their core marketing message. Yet following ten games during the current schedule, this doesn't represent a landscape that is equally balanced among elite teams, poor performers, and average squads. Instead, it's a scenario where most of the league appear to be sufficient.

Clear Picture in NFC

Looking at the NFC side, at least, the picture becomes more distinct. Los Angeles and Seattle (both at 7-2) appear to be the most well-rounded squads in the NFL, and achieved blowout wins in their weekend matchups. The Eagles with six wins despite their struggles maintain among the most gifted lineups across the NFL, similar to the Packers (5-2-1 record). Even the Lions (6-3), who have been inconsistent on offense and defense while managing tension on their coaching staff, have proven they can hammer strong franchises. For each of these squads, one can readily envision a Super Bowl path.

Muddled AFC Picture

Over in the AFC, the playoff picture is thoroughly confusing. The current division frontrunners through ten weeks: the Colts, Patriots, Broncos (all standing at eight wins) and Steelers (5-4). Take another look. Kansas City isn't there. No Bills inclusion. Baltimore and Cincinnati are absent. Historically strong franchises, backed by elite NFL signal-callers, display either obvious team deficiencies or have been hit by injuries.

Competitive Balance System

In some ways, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. But watching this year’s four division leaders within the conference still feels strange. Areas of each team suggest title potential, but not in their entirety. Team Breakdowns

Indianapolis Colts

First, examining Indianapolis, Daniel Jones hasn't descended to total collapse. However, recent performances have raised concerns. He’s back to turning over the ball and faltering under duress. He was sacked seven times versus Atlanta on Sunday, and endured a short sequence in which he threw a pick and fumbled three times. This follows he turned the ball over on five occasions against the Steelers.

The Colts attack thrived early in the season since Jones evaded game-changing errors. Jonathan Taylor and the offensive line ensure Indianapolis remains good enough to survive some negative plays, as they did in Berlin. Yet Jones going back to his old blunder-prone days would terminate championship hopes.

Patriots Examination

The Patriots seem relatively comparable. Previously, they were league laughingstocks. Now, they’re football's most unexpected success and the most successful franchise in the NFL following seven consecutive victories. If not for committing turnover errors a manageable matchup facing Pittsburgh, they'd possess nine wins, one loss as the league's best. In the prior year, they appeared aged and sluggish. Currently they're youthful, quick and confident. However, we must acknowledge the weakness of New England's opponents. They have faced the easiest slate across the NFL, yet vulnerabilities remain. Their quarterback has been sacked thirty-five times – among the highest totals – and some of the shots he endured during the game appeared dangerous. Over time, those beatings accumulate.

Broncos Situation

The Broncos hold eight wins similarly, and it still feels as if they’re holding their breath. Bo Nix has shown inconsistency, and the offensive unit laboring, with the defense doing all the heavy lifting. Without serviceable quarterback play, the Broncos aren’t scaring playoff opponents. The Chargers are also hovering within their division holding a 7-2 record, but the injuries along their offensive line will present challenges to achieve championship contention.

Steelers Examination

Then we have the Steelers, somehow still leading the AFC North despite being thumped a decisive loss to Los Angeles in the evening game. Their scoring margin remains negative, their defense regularly vanishes, and the QB's current constraints given his veteran status continue to show up. They maintain a 5-4 record while surviving, however, the Ravens, with their QB returning to health and facing easier opponents, have won three consecutive. This development isn't entirely shocking that Baltimore has closed within a game of the Steelers, though the speed of this shift highlights deficiencies within Pittsburgh’s inconsistencies. The fact Baltimore began with a 1-5 record and still look like likely to claim the title speaks volumes regarding the entire AFC.

Historical Favorites

The Ravens represent a segment of the Big Three – together with Bills and Chiefs – fueled by former MVP signal-callers, that would continue to generate the highest anxiety in opposing teams if they made the playoffs. They're the teams everyone hopes to avoid, however, both franchises persistently undermine themselves.

Buffalo Bills

Previously, the Bills felt confident after beating the Chiefs. This weekend they encountered one of the most disappointing losses this year. They didn't merely fall against Miami; they looked terrible, falling 30-13 on the road. It was Miami’s first win versus Buffalo in more than 1,000 days.
