Last year, star Jude Law remarked he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for portraying the Russian leader in a new film. The movie, though, may align so closely with the carefully constructed version promoted by Russian state media that, within Russia, it reads as a compliment rather than a critique.

The Crafted Superhero

Over a long period, the Kremlin and its pop-culture machine have worked together to forge a tailor-made version of Putin. This figure is a political superhero devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a Russian James Bond who always knows more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a television show launched last October, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “rescue” Russia from disorder. Although the character's name a different name, the implication is clear: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions frequently result in buttressing this identical story instead of debunking it. An adaptation based on a bestselling satirical novel aims to subvert the leader's mythology by presenting him not as a cause but as a consequence, moving the narrative weight to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, Putin is shown as having been chosen by influential figures to steady the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and practically plead him to take the top job. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, desiring enduring influence.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. Historically, these events ever happened.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one ever begged Putin to accept the role. The presidency was effectively a casting call with many contenders. Central to this process stood an influential oligarch from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the state de facto.

• According to an expert who studied his rise, the future president merely met the necessary criteria: loyal, from the intelligence world, and politically neutral.

Curiously, the shift to depicting him as a “spy” may in part have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s debut as James Bond. The grittier interpretation led Russian media and online audiences to make comparisons with their leader. Mashup posters replacing the actor's likeness with Putin’s surfaced on Moscow streets, fueling the growing tendency to see him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the authorities are likely to seize the opportunity to portray this choice as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its omission of mass protests, the political rivals, or key figures from its narrative, even though it includes the past decade, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.

In Russian cinema, the president is often an all-powerful presence who never appears on screen. He is hinted at through photographs or calls “from above”. In this new film, he at last gets a recognizable face—one that may inadvertently validate the very myths it perhaps aims to question.
