The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.
A new acronym surfaced a few months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is found only in Gaza, as stated by medical experts including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for doctors to treat a young patient who has lost their entire family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of child amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy about numerous doctors returning from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.
A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that genocidal acts are still being committed. The Israeli government has denied these claims, just as it disavows everything it is accused of. Yet as young survivors are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, it seems, is what international harmony manifests as.
Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be completely different.
A Selective Vision
Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that international journalists are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy
The contest turns 70 next year – almost double the projected longevity of someone in Gaza now. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. An institution that was originally built on togetherness has devolved into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
