The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
